TRL is used in ...

Higher Education

‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.’

Aristotle

For 18 to 25 year old students The Ready List facilitates peaceful accelerated learning. This applies to both academic and physical-orientated study.

TRL is also very useful for managing and reducing the impact of stressful situations including, deadlines, exams and performance anxiety.

How Does TRL Fit Into the Academic Year?

The Royal College of Music in London has embedded the Alexander Technique in the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

In this short film students and Alexander professors talk about applying the Alexander Technique to developing some of the essential skills for musicians.

Unpacking TRL For Students

"To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself." Thich Nhat Hanh

Stop: When you are about to get down to work, Stop, to create a spacious moment to consider how you are going to do this. This calms the autonomic nervous system, so you are ready for study with awareness of your physical ease and mental space.

Think Stop.

See: Ask yourself what you are seeing. If you find you are over-focused on a small area, e.g. the computer screen, allow your vision to pan out into panoramic as well as your chosen focus - this changes the freedom in your body - then you are more likely to be balancing and so more at ease and comfortable. Even more influentially, if this is academic work, your mind will be more flexible - you will have access to your creativity and deeper perception. Your eyes are joined directly to your brain and your vision is continuously affecting everything that is making your life what it is. Every 20 minutes or so, look of into the distance for a few seconds to reboot the system.

Think See.

Breathe: Notice whether you are breathing in or out or holding your breath. Your breathing is constantly changing with your emotional state. If you are holding your breath as you ‘concentrate’ your brain starts going to sleep. You need regular fresh air to keep the brain functioning well at conscious and subconscious levels. Your eyes need the oxygen too, so open a window and don’t hold your breath.

Think Breathe.

Soft and Tall: Everything works well when you are not tightening muscles and making yourself smaller. If you are feeling under pressure, you are making yourself smaller. Think of being your full height but don’t do it by stiffening your muscles and spine. You have a reflex programmed into your body to respond to gravity by expanding, let it work for you by thinking Soft and Tall.

Think Soft and Tall.
