What is The Ready List?

The Impact of TRL

“The Ready List has taught me to take time.

Accepting what happens and moving on with a mindset that inspires growth and improvement.”

TRL Student

“For me the Alexander Technique is not important, it’s crucial.”

Stephen Williams, Director of Music, Shrewsbury School

The Ready List for Secondary School Pupils

Why TRL is Important

Teenage years can be a daunting time for young people. Mental health has become a major concern for secondary school children and there is also increasing evidence that more and more teenagers are suffering from physical aches and pains, as well as panic attacks.

This is where The Ready List can help.

TRL teaches a number of life-long skills that can help young people navigate successfully through their time at secondary school and beyond:

  • TRL helps students cope with being under pressure and think clearly in times of stress.
  • It introduces the ability to self-regulate through life’s ups and downs and reset to feel they have time, space and ease.
  • It puts in place conditions to be calm, confident and co-ordinated.
  • It allows pupils to become more receptive to learning.
  • It gives the student tools to overcome physical discomfort such as neck, back and shoulder pain.
  • It can help improve performance in sport, music and public speaking.

The effect of the work is immediately impactful and students can learn to deepen and develop this understanding as they continue to study and use TRL throughout their lives.

Where is TRL Taught Right Now?

The Alexander Technique – on which The Ready List is based – is taught in secondary schools across the UK and beyond. These include the likes of Eton College, The Yehudi Menuhin School and Wellington College, as well as the junior departments of major music conservatoires and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

See below for a comprehensive list of where the Alexander Technique is taught in secondary education.

TRL for Your School

We have developed a unique programme for Secondary Schools wanting to introduce The Ready List to their staff and pupils.

This programme has been tried and tested over many years by Alexander Teachers who specialise in working in education.

Some Quotes from Pupils

"I think Alexander helps you improve your confidence as you feel relaxed and a lot less stressed after each lesson.  It also lets you notice habits that you do which helps you to stay focused and relaxed which is useful throughout the day and when playing your instrument."

Raffaella

"Alexander Technique lets me stop and think and notice what I am doing and if what I am doing is unnecessary to put myself right (by balancing).  I can ‘think up’ and get rid of butterflies! (nerves)"

Mark

"Body Confidence (from our Alexander lessons) is knowing how to look after my body and mind and seeing and feeling the benefits of that."

Serena

"I can physically, mentally and emotionally feel a difference - I can allow myself to not be tense anymore.  Now I am free!"

Anna

Introductory Programmes

The TRL journey in your  school starts with an initial workshop session with one of our trained and experienced Alexander Technique teachers.
These workshops are fun and informative and help give school staff a taster of what the work involves, and how its skills can be transferred into many different disciplines.

Initial TRL Training for Classroom Teachers.

Depending on the length of the session we would aim to cover some or all of the following:

  • To introduce and explain the usefulness of The Ready List for Secondary School teachers and its relevance for self regulation and resilience. Including how it can be applied in a classroom setting.
  • To introduce Body Mapping and its importance for everyday activity. How it can improve and create a physical literacy and help with coordination and resetting to ease.
  • To introduce Constructive Rest and how it can help restore energy. Looking at how it leads to finding a quiet mind and an easy body.
  • A short discussion on where the work is taught and the application of this work for students.
  • To briefly look at the history of the work in Education and the impact of F M Alexander's and John Dewey's understanding of the fear reflexes.
  • Looking at how the fear reflexes can disassociate us from our sense of wellbeing.
  • Learning how to restore safety and readiness to learn in an approachable and relevant way for young people.
  • Session includes materials to be given out on the day.

Schools often find that this training session works well in conjunction with a separate introductory session for pupils. This will involve practical activities, targeted specifically at secondary school-age children.

Initial TRL Training for Pupils.

Depending on the length of the session we would aim to cover some or all of the following:

  • Introducing the Ready List and its impact and relevance for Mental and Physical health.
  •  Introducing Body Mapping and how it helps with movement and coordination in everyday and for specific skills e.g. sport or playing an instrument.
  •  Introduce Constructive Rest and the impact on structural ease and creating a calm mindset.
  • Session includes materials to be given out on the day.

Schools can then choose from a variety of follow-up courses to further develop the work, ranging from one-off workshops through to regular, ongoing classes.

Many schools find that a 10-week course for pupils in small groups enables them:

  • To successfully put The Ready List's powerful and transferable skills into action
  • To help to improve both physical and mental health
  • To experience the benefits this can have with academic learning.
